DREAMING OF BABY When it comes to predicting the gender of an unborn baby, mothers just might know best. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University interviewed 104 pregnant women who had chosen not to learn their babies' gender through prenatal testing. The mothers-to-be were asked to foretell whether they were carrying a girl or boy and to describe whether their guess was based on folklore, the way they were carrying the baby, a dream or just a feeling. Of the women who based their forecast on a feeling or dream, 71% were correct, and all the women who cited...

Nebraska defines a "partial-birth abortion" as a procedure in which someone "performing the abortion partially delivers vaginally a living unborn child before killing the child and completing the delivery." However, "partial-birth abortion" is a misleading term--as well as a non-medical one--because the Nebraska law and the popular debate applies only to pre-viability abortions in which the fetus is unable to live outside the womb and therefore could not be "born" and survive...

Some 22 percent of pregnant women in South Africa are HIV-positive, and AZT and Nevirapine have been successful in preventing mother-to-child transmission of the virus. "AZT has been shown to prevent transmission of the virus to unborn children," says Gorman. "There's always a chance that HIV won't transmit and that some of those being treated might now have contracted HIV anyway, but even if women aren't compelled to take it there's no excuse not to make it available...

...brother, the entertaining sailor Richard Dauntless (Francis Crick '03). Angle is ideally cast as the naive, helpless Robin, who becomes even more inept at doing his daily evil deed once his true identity is revealed, although he is creative in his short-lived crime spree, managing to disinherit his unborn son and forge one of his servant's checks. Crick is extremely convincing as the overly emotional, yet big-hearted sailor Dauntless, although occasionally he tends to swallow some of the song lyrics. But what Crick sometimes loses in verbal communication is more than made up for by his farcical...

...once we can distinguish conscious brain processes from unconscious ones and show how they interact to cause behavior, there is nothing left to explain, and that people who are looking for some extra ingredient are just confused. Some concede that sentience is still a mystery but expect that an unborn genius will someday explain it to us. Still others suspect that the brain did not evolve to grasp the answer, any more than it can visualize what came before the Big Bang or the shape of a curved 4-D universe...
