...pipeline is the most expensive privately financed construction project in history. In keeping with its grandeur and technical sophistication, it has produced unprecedented engineering, financial, environmental and legal headaches. Not all have been alleviated; surprisingly, in view of the U.S. energy pinch, the pipeline's operators are most uncertain where they can market all the oil that the line will transport (there has even been talk of shipping some to Japan). Nonetheless, this week-nearly a decade after the project's conception and more than three years after construction started-the Alaska pipeline begins carrying its first...

Most Americans would call South Africa's treatment of blacks immoral, but we are in a poor position to preach on this: our own progress in race relations has been too slow and too uncertain. The message we should convey to South Africans is that, right or wrong, their system of apartheid cannot endure. A society based on white supremacy and the absolute separation of the races can survive no more than other institutions that were overtaken by changing worlds, including feudalism, divine-right monarchy, colonialism and laissez-faire capitalism. He spoke vaguely of forming a new "national defense concept" that "need not be in conflict with our membership in NATO." Ecevit did not spell...

...Harvard women's studies committee does not have to worry about becoming a growth industry just yet. Although the proposal will be discussed in the fall, its prospects for survival are uncertain. Dean Rosovsky refuses to express any personal opinion on the matter, pending recommendations from various committees and Faculty Council debate. Pipkin says faculty CUE members expressed no hostility to the idea of looking into women's studies, but thought anything else would be premature at this point...

There is more than a touch of schizophrenia in America's midyear mood. The nation remains well disposed toward Jimmy Carter, yet lacks confidence in his ability to handle the uncertain economy. Americans complain that the Government is not doing enough to whip inflation, yet want the Government to quit meddling so much in their lives. They want Carter to do something, yet doubt that any one individual-even a President-can solve the nation's problems...
