This month Cooder began an eight-week tour round the U.S. with his friend Randy Newman; after that, he will get down to serious work on his next album. The contents remain uncertain, but Cooder is currently fascinated by the work of a Tex-Mex accordionist named Flaco Jimenez. He has also just returned from a trip to Hawaii, where he and some Hawaiians spent two weeks making and taping some music of the islands -"not really antique stuff," he says, "just Hawaiian drinking-and-good-time songs from before the war, the kind of thing you never hear back...

...fitting complement to Ballad of a Soldier. Made in 1938, it represents Eisenstein's effort to re-integrate himself with the Stalin regime after a long period of disfavor. Alexander Nevsky is in every sense a one-dimensional film. Its theme is patriotism, and its message, directed in no uncertain terms at Nazi Germany, is that Russia will ward off any attempt at conquest. What began to emerge in Roma was a synthesis of direct reminiscence and fantasy, of dream and experience, of actuality and archetype. Roma was unsteady and uncertain, but Amarcord marks a triumphant consolidation. It represents some of the finest work Fellini has ever done-which also means that it stands with the best that anyone in films has ever achieved...

...hard to believe, however, that even the lowliest peasant is totally unaware that his country faces an uncertain and perhaps worrisome future. Dominated for a quarter of a century by the ideas and personality of one man, China has yet to go through the experience, always wrenching in a one-party state, of a transferal of supreme state power. But Mao Tse-tung is now 81; although apparently in command of his party, he is physically very feeble. His much heralded meetings with foreign dignitaries, held usually in his book-lined study, are always spur-of-the-moment affairs, apparently...
