Sunday was apparently the last straw. It is unclear what set Billy off, but after the Yanks' 3-1 win in Chicago, he attacked both Reggae and Steinbrenner. He told Reggae, on his first day back, to shut up. Then he said that Jackson and Steinbrenner deserved each other, calling Reggae a liar and Steinbrenner "a convict"--a reference to his boss's conviction a few years back for illegal contributions to Richard Nixon's wonderfully clean 1972 campaign. It's not nice to call your boss a convict, even if it's true. Martin knew what he was doing...

Nobody is insisting on the immediate replacement of Mobutu, if only because it is unclear whether anybody else could hold the country together. But this time, in return for saving him once again, the Western powers are determined to insist on a strict price in terms of social and economic reform. Among the proposed demands: a completely rebuilt army, a remodeled central bank, better food distribution, and guarantees that there will be no government reprisals against the civilian population of Shaba, which has never liked Mobutu and made little secret of its sympathy for the invading rebels...

...future of the new government is still unclear: Dean Epps has warned that the minority clause may be illegal, and other administrators have refused to say whether the assembly will be allowed to play an active role in selecting representatives to the student-faculty committees. Nonetheless, the Student Assembly will take office next semester, and the administration may well have to do some hard thinking about how it will deal with a suddenly louder student voice...
