Even before those obstacles surfaced, tech companies faced serious questions on the demand side. Firms have invested heavily in PCs and other "must-have" gadgets in the past few years. Sure, the stuff is really cool. But executives want to see payback before they extend the binge. It's unclear whether PCs and, say, Internet connections have made office workers more productive or simply more distracted. Greenspan can also claim credit for knowing when to declare victory and go home. It is unclear whether he ever seriously thought inflation could be brought down to zero. But he seems to realize that the present rate of about 2% is close enough to fulfill his stated ambition to keep price increases so small that they do not drive business decisions--that nobody feels impelled to buy or build before the price goes...

...Over the weekend, Kim engineered an amnesty for two imprisoned former dictators, Chun Doo Hwan and Roh Tae Woo, who had both previously ordered Kim's execution. And Kim still has hopes for South Korea's reunification with the North, though it's still unclear whether those across the DMZ in Pyongyang share his desire. Long before that can happen, however, the South Korean economy must submit itself to the IMF knife. Financial players still doubt Kim has the discipline to go with his dreams...

...With this decision, the Faculty Council is forcing those who are not exempt to take Science Core classes even when they have passed A.P. tests in science that are recognized by the science departments as comparable to their introductory classes. Furthermore, though it is undergoing change, it is often unclear what the objective is for a science Core class and how these goals differ from A to B. This lack of clarity often leads to either a very limited or very facile reach in a class meant to show essentially the breadth of science to non-science concentrators...
