...began redraping Grandfather Richard's operas in modern scenic dress seven years ago, première audiences at the Bayreuth Festival have usually focused more on the props than the performance. But last week at the festival's curtain raiser-a new Wolfgang Wagner production of Tristan und Isolde-all ears were sharply tuned to the sounds coming out of the concealed orchestra pit. There Conductor Wolfgang Sawallisch, at 34 perhaps the most gifted German conductor to emerge since Herbert von Karajan and the youngest ever to conduct at Bayreuth, was making his most important operatic debut...
Close behind Bayer among the Farben heirs is Badische Anilin-und Soda-Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) of Ludwigshafen, with sales of $357 million from chemicals, plastics, dyes, fertilizers, insecticides. Worst damaged of the big three, B.A.S.F. saw its Rhineside plant at Ludwigshafen 45% bombed out, started up again in 1945 with only 800 workers. Today the smoky, sprawling plant is Western Europe's biggest chemical unit with 36,600 workers. B.A.S.F. also employs 11,000 at its Auguste-Victoria coal mine in the Ruhr. Masterminding B.A.S.F.'s comeback is its wartime head, Chairman Carl Wurster, 56, who was acquitted...

Said he: "I am something of an actor. I let my tongue hang out of my mouth, and my eyes rolled in my head. I was never better. They were frightened...
Then, too, Turkey's old allies and friends, the Germans, had come back. Representing his fellow Ruhr industrialists, Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach was taken on a tour of Turkey's mines and factories and lavishly feted. He promised to spend 71 million marks ($17 million) on a new blast furnace that would more than double Turkey's pig-iron production. Excited Turkish newspapers headlined that Krupp "might" also finance a bridge across the Bosporus, "might" build a railway to Iran (he did say that he would be happy to furnish some of the equipment). German...
