Just before the Cambrian, however, something big happened. The deep oceans were made oxygen rich and sulfide poor, Knoll believes, when an unusual spate of undersea landslides (triggered by the breakup of a primordial supercontinent) buried megatons of oxygen-consuming debris. Virtually simultaneously, microscopic algae spread far and wide. For the first time since the planet's formation 4 billion years earlier, the oceans were capable of supporting a population of small-, medium- and large-bodied animals...

Disaster-movie-type predictions that a potential undersea disturbance could unleash a giant tsunami, or tidal wave, on the United States' low-lying Eastern Seaboard are probably overblown. Sparked by a report in this month's issue of the journal Geology that researchers have discovered cracks in the continental shelf off Virginia, residents have been alarmed by visions of 20-foot waves heading toward North Carolina, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The scientists behind the report, however, are very cautious in saying that such an event is highly unlikely. "This is a possible disaster kind of scenario, but it's just...

...know if the cracks are longtime formations that have gone unnoticed or a more recent phenomenon. They do know, however, that they form part of a wide scar caused by a landslide that occurred 16,000 to 18,000 years ago. Such a slide could be triggered by undersea seismic activity or the decomposition of gas hydrate deposits, a very rare occurrence on the East Coast continental shelf but one that would have devastating consequences. We'll know more about the situation this summer when the researchers go back to try and determine whether the cracks...

Before Cousteau, undersea exploration was limited by the length of a human breath or the tether on a diving helmet. His co-invention of the Aqua-Lung in 1943 freed us to roam the ocean depths--like an "archangel" flying through the heavens, as he put it. Maker of more than 150 films, beginning with his Oscar-winning The Silent World in 1956, Cousteau revealed a flotilla of wondrous creatures to an audience that was instantly entranced. In his last book, Man, Octopus and Orchid, published shortly after his death in 1997 at the age of 87, Cousteau summed...

...Undersea," the young writer's first publication in a national magazine (September 1937), was seminal in theme and tone to all her later writing. Together with an evocative Sun feature, "Chesapeake Eels Seek the Sargasso Sea" ("From every river and stream along the whole Atlantic Coast, eels are hurrying to the..."), it was the starting point for her first book...
