...understand Johnson's appeal to the language of "egalitarianism" and the importance of equality of opportunity. But we must remember that there are plenty of single-sex organizations at Harvard which do not exist because of some latent sense of gender superiority. I refer to organizations such as the Din and Tonics or the Radcliffe Pitches which have all male or female membership. In both cases there are artistic values associated with all-male or all-female voices and skits and the reason why we hear no outcry is because these opportunities are balanced for men and women...
...seems flagrantly immoral to make sheer entertainment out of something that is so real and so horrifying for the people involved. Yet, one wonders whether, if the coverage had been different, less entertaining, Americans would have cared at all. If turning life into a movie helps us to understand what is going on and sympathize with others in situations far from our own, perhaps this approach is the best, the most morally upstanding, course of action...
Ultimately, this film is very much like the band it professes to portray. While respected in its day, Hard Core Logo finds an ill reception from modern audiences as their tour slowly self-destructs. Maneuvering 16 singers (Marco, Guiseppe, their wives and 12 of their closest friends) around the tiny Agassiz stage is difficult and requires clockwork choreography and impeccably-enunciated singing, but this cast has the potential to make it work...
Every December, when the "winter" decorations go up, I am astonished. We attend an institution where concerned students were able to convince administrators that the word "freshman" was pernicious. How is it that those same administrators can't understand that the House-sponsored display of symbols celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, isn't similarly problematic...
