...easier to understand Biberkopf's hallucinatory insanity, and the symbolism of his dreams, when one considers his illness in the context of the brilliance extinguished by Reinhold's murder of Mieze. In perhaps the most subtly metaphorical of the dream sequences, Biberkopf ventures into the woods where he and Mieze used to go, not far from where her body was later found. On this trip, however, with Mieze dead, all the birds are caged, captive like the canary which once lived in the lovers' apartment...
...immediate reaction to seeing such a performance would normally be to assume that the lead actor is simply incompetent, and doesn't "understand" that Macbeth is supposed to make you unhappy instead of amusing you. The problem is that this interpretation doesn't jive with the other facts of the production. Macbeth's director, Monidca Henderson '99, and two of its producers--Nick Saunders '99 and Sam Speedie '99--are all theater veterans with several successful Shakespearean productions behind them. Overall, Macho Meditations does contain quite a bit of women-bashing, but there is also a surprisingly serious overtone that suggests that women are wonderful creatures that men are trying to understand. But the kicker of the book is the authors themselves--two Harvard grads who concentrated in philosophy and subsequently dropped out of grad school. (And they say you can't amount to anything with a humanities degree these days!) It's easy to write this book off as another ridiculous anti-feminist joke that only makes men as a whole look even dumber. But once you shrug...
