Seven months ago, former Dean of the College Benedict H. Gross ’71 retired from his position in University Hall. Now, interim Dean David R. Pilbeam’s tenure is nearing its close, and a search for Gross’ permanent replacement is underway. Rather than be prematurely retrospective on the successes and failures of Pilbeam’s interim, we urge the administration to recognize the immediacy of student concerns in the search for a replacement. Although this might seem self-evident, it is imperative that the new dean of the College be responsive to student...

Tennessee was Fred Thompson's turf until the Senator-turned actor abandoned his 2008 presidential hopes on January 22 with his name still on the ballot and early voting already underway. His departure has left the state's Republican primary race tightly split between John McCain, Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee, while Hillary Clinton, who has long enjoyed the loyalty of state Democrats, is expected to easily carry the Democratic primary on Super Tuesday, thanks in part to party faithful who remember her husband carrying the state in the 1992 and 1996 presidential elections with favorite son Al Gore...

While it was underway, Lubetkin was scheduled to work a five-night engagement at the La Jolla Comedy Store (which was not affected by the strike), but he showed up late on opening night and Mitzi canceled the gig. ...Collective survival instinct, for one. With investigations underway by the Paris stock market regulators and shareholder lawsuits proliferating, Société Générale is now considered a fat and defenseless takeover target. The likely prospect that its post-merger work force would be slashed is a chilling one in a France groggy with nearly 8% unemployment. During trading Tuesday, SocGen's stock price jumped nearly 11% amid heavy trading on rumors rival BNP is planning a hostile bid on the bank. That prospect appeared even more feasible on Wednesday, as BNP announced 2007 profits...

That research is also already underway. In a study published in the journal Lancet in October, Dr. Henrik Gronberg, another co-author of the NEJM study from the Karolinksa Institute, found an association between family history and aggressiveness in certain kinds of cancer. He found that a woman whose mother died from breast cancer, for instance, was also more likely than other women to develop an aggressive form of the disease. Gronberg says the goal is to establish a specific link between genetic markers, risk, and a cancer's potential invasiveness. "We're reading about genetic factors for these common...
