BILLED as a "Brazilian Spectacle," a celebration of South American peasant life, Ariano Suassuna's The Rogue's Trial is an often entertaining, somewhat uneven, quasi-insipid piece of theater. It is, we are informed as soon as the lights have dimmed, "a highly moral story," a plea for mercy. The high moral which the play espouses, however, turns out to be that regardless of what one does on earth, heaven is ultimately attainable. It is no wonder that the Brazilian government and coffee-growers have supported the production of the play...

...songs Yarrow performed Sunday are on That's Enough For Me. The album is uneven, one or two of the songs very ordinary, but Yarrow's voice and the arrangements almost always avert real disappointment. The Maytals, a Jamaican reggae group, are used to good effect, and if Yarrow's version of "The Harder They Come" falls short of Jimmy Cliff, how could it do otherwise...

...acting is uneven and there are lots of awkward moments, but Craig Bowley as Randy, Michael Mitchell as Alec, Bernie Holmberg as their producer (both of them were "in the theater," they explain, before they inherited the hotel), and George Clark as Cousin Warren keep everything except Uncle Harold's corpse (and maybe even that) above water most of the time. Lee Abraham, who directed and also plays Cosmic Debris, stands out--he's polished and in command all the way through...
