...most glaring examples of Dukakis' opportunism and inconsistency is his uneven support of gay and lesbian rights. Throughout his first and most of his second term as governor, Dukakis was widely perceived as being a strong supporter of gay and lesbian issues. During his 1986 bid for reelection, however, the Boston Globe ran a story on two gay men who were foster parents to two young children. Legislative outcry and political pressure soon led Dukakis to formulate a plan making it virtually impossible for gays and lesbians in Massachusetts to be foster parents...

Andromache is a production of mordant humor, bitter irony and moral force -- if also of significant miscalculation and highly uneven acting. Some of the performers are tripped up by Eric Korn's half-arch, half-vernacular translation, in which vulgarity and clumsy colloquialism ("Is death the net result of all my love?") clash with the neoclassicism of the set and costumes. The plot is a sour inversion of the lovers' tangle in A Midsummer Night's Dream: Orestes (Kevin McNally), son of the murdered war hero Agamemnon, pursues his cousin Hermione (Penelope Wilton), daughter of Helen of Troy...

...reason for populism's appeal in 1988 is that the economic recovery of the Reagan years has been uneven. The October crash followed a long period of Washington scandals and Wall Street abuses that heightened animosities toward big shots of all varieties. In a comprehensive survey, the Times-Mirror Co. found 77% agreeing with the statement "There is too much power concentrated in . . . a few big companies...

...liveliest actor on stage is Martha Moore, who brings an appropriately strung-out wiltedness to the role of Veta Louise. Jason Tomarken also deserves mention for an uneven but amusingly arrogant performance as Dr. Sanderson. Tomarken is tall and skinny and uses his body very well on stage to achieve comic effects, especially when he leans over to peer over the over the top of his glasses. Donal Logue hammed up his role as a muscular hospital attendant and also raised some welcome chuckles. Frankly the characters in this play are so goofy already that the funniest performances result from...

...week or two, but the differences are minor. The celebrated catlike movements look more Vegas-like now. In both casts, only the dancers playing the secondary role of Alonzo (Ken Nagy in Washington, Stephen Moore touring) achieve the cool detachment of another species. The singing, although always vibrant, is uneven. In the peripatetic cast Andy Spangler glows as the Elvis-like Rum Tum Tugger and Leslie Ellis is haunting as Grizabella, the faded glamour cat, but in the Washington troupe the performers in those roles, Douglas Graham and Janene Lovullo, do not measure...
