...Steelmakers got a big lift from the auto boom, but results were still uneven as the industry continued to be hurt by competition from imports. U.S. Steel reported earnings of $253 million, seemingly much better than the $172 million of the year before. But the gain was entirely attributable to the company's switchover to straight-line depreciation; otherwise, its profit would have only been $94 million. Accounting changes also contributed to profit increases at Inland Steel (up 44%), Bethlehem (21%) and Republic Steel...

...this first novel Russell Greenan shows descriptive powers as impressive as his unsettling story is fanciful. He has an odd ear for uneven sounds. Describing a man's chuckle, for example, he writes: "It sounded as if someone down inside his throat was crumpling a paper bag." In real life, Greenan is a devoted student and connoisseur of art, which may partly explain his remarkable success at supporting raving fantasy and very real suspense in a single story. Chunky Jon Enscoe hung back in second place for most of the collegiate mile race before unleashing a blistering kick with a lap and a half remaining for a ten-yard margin at the wire. An uneven pace accounted for the relatively slow time of 4:15.3 despite Enscoe's strong last quarter of 61.5 seconds...

This aspect of Lorraine Hansberry's expanded humanity is enhanced by an interracial cast, in which whites as well as blacks speak for her in the first person - most notably bright, blonde Barbara Baxley and beautiful black Cicely Tyson. The production is necessarily episodic, fragmentary and uneven, but the cast, ably directed by Gene Frankel, works well as an ensemble to thread an elegiac mood through the range of comedy, rage, reminiscence and introspection. André Womble expertly manages a wide variety of black male parts, from an African nationalist to a run away slave; John Beal does equally...
