...Snow Ball, like the best of Gurney's plays, is full of virtuosities. It is deft, insightful and winsome. The author's persistent tic is an unwillingness, perhaps an inability, to tell a straightforward story. No more than a few pages at a time of The Snow Ball unfold in chronological sequence. Instead, there are flashbacks, flashes forward, and crosscuts from one life story to another. Gurney is a master at this counterpoint. But he provides no crescendo, no epiphany. Despite many charms, The Snow Ball melts into fond but vague memory...
Watching a new TV season unfold may be mind numbing for some viewers, but for network executives it is an intense learning experience. Huddled over their weekly Nielsen report cards, they chart the winners and losers, try to divine trends and make mid-course corrections. Judging from the replacement series joining the prime-time schedule this month (the traditional start of TV's "second season"), the networks have done their homework. Herewith, the major lessons of autumn...
...benefit of the doubt. U.S. relations with Canada will inevitably become clearer following President Reagan's planned trip to Quebec in March, a few weeks before the Mulroney government's new budget and a number of important policy papers are unveiled. "We're watching as events unfold, and we're encouraged," said a U.S. official. Finance Minister Michael Wilson calls...

Look for the predictable (and typically Shakespearean) swordfights, women dressing like men, hidden identities, a death or two, an ending with two marriage engagements, and the requisite comic relief--basic ingredients for 17th century drama. The play, however, is not dated since it grapples with timeless questions such as the nature of truth, dreams and illusion. Yet with a monologue that closes on "Since life is a dream at best, and even dreams themselves are dreams," and lines...
...able to predict world weather patterns more accurately. But when Ride applied her expertise with the Canadian-built 50-ft. remote manipulator arm to lift the ERBS from the shuttle's cargo bay, two 12-ft. by 8-ft. solar panels on the satellite refused to unfold. After fruitlessly shaking the cylindrical ERBS with the arm, the astronauts turned the shuttle toward the sun, until the frozen latches on the panels loosened up. Within three hours, the satellite was deployed...
