Generally, periods of self-indulgence have given way to eras of greater idealism. Harvard's Samuel Huntington, for one, is convinced the standard cycle will unfold. Says he: "Just as in the 1960s, this patriotic wave will in turn lead to a concern about change, whether political, economic or social." So far, however, the current spirit, patriotic and otherwise, shows little sign of being harnessed purposefully. Says Sam Brown, who was director of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency that operates the Peace Corps and VISTA, during the Carter Administration: "With all this sense of feeling good about ourselves...

Unfortunately, these themes unfold amid only the barest trappings of dramatic action. Falk, Svanhild, and their social circle, consisting of the various engaged couples and suitors plus an assortment of guests and maiden aunts, simply sit around philosophizing and arguing in a sort of endless garden party. Some pleasure derives from the garden designed by Fred Weber, and intricate structure of terraced platforms and bridges on which speakers leap about, separating and meeting again. ...commands into the computer, and the machine responds with descriptions of people and places and snatches of dialogue that develop the story. Suspects duck in and out of rooms; clues appear and disappear; characters lie low or kill again, depending on the player's actions. The story can unfold in literally thousands of ways. A typical investigation, including starts and restarts, can run 40 hours or longer. "It takes me three to six months to get completely through one," says Craig Pearce, 31, a building manager from Berwyn, Ill. "It's unbelievable how you can get hooked...
