The Harvard Policy Committee yesterday sent Dean Ford a new pass-fail proposal. It recommended that students be allowed to take an ungraded course each semester either as part of their normal four-course load, or as a fifth course.
Columbia last week joined Princeton, Pennsylvania, and Brown in adopting a pass-fail system to alleviate grade pressure. At the same time, Princeton radically expanded its present plan and now will not limit the number of courses taken by a student for ungraded credit.
It will also have to decide whether students taking ungraded tutorial or independent study should be allowed to take a second ungraded course.
The Government Department, which initiated the move toward ungraded senior tutorials, awarded exactly the same grade on thesis and tutorial last year.
