Universal military training, which would put every American youth into some kind of uniform, is probably even less popular now than it was in 1952, when the House killed a U.M.T. bill 236 to 162. The military dislikes the idea anyway, for it would work against a strong, dependable regular military service and put them in the business of rehabilitating a great many swept-up delinquents...
...Several times we asked when the announcement would come. A Buddhist Boy Scout told us in broken English to wait another five minutes. A man in a green uniform blandly assured us that it would deal with the reasons for the rebel fight against the Ky government. That hardly seemed worth summoning us to the pagoda, and it suddenly occurred to us that it might very well be a trap. If the rebels feared a government attack on Tinh Hoi, what better way to forestall it than by arranging the presence of three dozen foreign reporters inside the pagoda...
...council meets weekly to review every trial judge's forthcoming sentences. Each judge proposes his sentence, and the others suggest increases or decreases or shifts in emphasis. No judge is required to accept any of the advice. But all act together, and they have achieved what they call "uniform philosophy" if not uniform sentences. One result is that Detroit now leads all federal district courts in the use of indeterminate sentences that give well-behaved prisoners an earlier crack at parole. Impressed, district courts in Illinois and New York are trying similar systems...
Newtonian or Quantum? After exposing the cylinder to light of a uniform wave length for periods ranging from half an hour to ten hours, the scientists analyzed its contents to detect molecules of deuterium hydride. The process was repeated, each time with a light beam of longer wave length and lower energy, until they failed to find molecules of deuterium hydride in the cylinder-no matter how long the gases had been exposed to the light. At this particular wave length, it seemed clear, the deuterium atoms had not been given enough velocity to split the hydrogen molecules and combine...
This year, the pendulum swung in the opposite direction. The Committee, by taking over the job, achieved an even distribution of the freshman class among the Houses. Each House got a fairly uniform sprinkling of scholars, athletes, actors, and writers. But to even out the allocations, the Committee had to ignore almost all the letters of preference and distribute the freshmen arbitrarily. A great deal of hope was pinned on the letters to preserve a degree of student choice in the final assignments. But something went wrong. The Committee isn't talking. Chances are that it received so many letters...
