...hope proved hollow. Before the convention delegates could reassemble, the three principal parties of the Protestant United Ulster Unionist Coalition caucused at Stormont. Among the subjects discussed was the convention's mandate: that some formula be found for power sharing acceptable both to Ulster's 1 million Protestants and 500,000 Catholics. In the caucus debates, William ("King Billy") Craig, leader of the militant Vanguard Unionist Progressive Party, emerged in the unlikely role of moderate. Long a hardliner, Craig now was urging that Catholic moderates be considered for Cabinet posts, though only on a temporary, emergency basis...
...speeches at "The Field" this year all centered around Loyalty. Loyalty is a concept of much debate among the Unionists (those seeking to perpetuate union with the United Kingdom) since Enoch Powell, the Official Unionist M.P. from South Down said the week before that a proper Loyalist should be "loyal to the Crown in Parliament: the Parliament of the United Kingdom." One series of 19 murals, called "The Story of Our Struggle," show's events from Mexico's loss of the Southwest in 1848 to a present-day farm unionist cutting the chains that bind a fallen comrade. So well does the series trace the rise of chicanismo that elementary school classes are brought to study the murals as part of their history lessons...
Backed by its increasingly militant 28,000 members, the N.U.J. this month swung into action against the publishers of the provincial papers-"the last Scrooges of England," as one unionist called them. The union has demanded 19%% to 39% pay increases on minimum salaries that now range from $70 to $91 per week. More important, it has demanded a closed shop, which would make it the sole representative of all British journalists, including reluctant editors...
