...system--a sort of electronic hydroponic garden, in which the roots of plants grow in water without soil--makes even the darkest kitchen counter a fertile plain. Using the AeroGarden is foolproof: plug it in, fill the basin with water, pop in the seedpods and watch things grow. The unit has a lighting system that cycles on and off to give your plants the perfect amount of light on which to thrive. The downside is that you have to use AeroGrow's proprietary seedpods, but at least the choices are vast, ranging from salad greens to cherry tomatoes to chili...
...despite Warren's disdain for Prosperity's theological claims, some Prosperity churches have become players in the very faith-based antipoverty world he inhabits, even while maintaining their distinctive theology. Kirbyjon Caldwell, who pastors Windsor Village, the largest (15,000) United Methodist church in the country, can sound as Prosperity as the next pastor: "Jesus did not die and get up off the Cross so we could live lives full of despair and disappointment," he says. He quotes the "abundant life" verse with all earnestness, even giving it a real estate gloss: "It is unscriptural not to own land...
...unable to unlock any potential secrets, the Italians have turned to the FBI for their code-busting expertise. A U.S. official confirmed an Italian newspaper story Thursday which reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Cryptanalysis and Racketeering Records Unit will be studying Provenzano's copy of the Bible. In the past, the FBI unit, located at the Bureau's laboratory in Quantico, Va., has uncovered illicit codes of prison gangs and deciphered messages from threatening letters. Now, they will try to determine if there are "any hidden messages" in the holy book, said a U.S. official...
Last year Dr. Ron Miller was in a hospital pre-op unit doing what he has done every week for more than three decades: administering an anesthetic to a patient headed for surgery. Miller served as an anesthesiologist in the Vietnam War and now chairs the department of anesthesia at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine; it's hard to imagine someone with more experience or better credentials. Even so, he was taken by surprise when he gave a low dose of a moderate sedative called midazolam, designed to put the patient into a semiconscious state, somewhere...
...More such research is certainly needed, but Power Plates can already be found in select gyms, rehabilitation centers and private homes. The machines are expensive: $3,500 for the home unit and $9,250 for the gym model, so some of the private owners are people with names like Madonna. (Soloflex has a simpler version of the Power Plate that sells for just $395.) But if you can't afford the cost-or the space-for such a bulky bit of hardware, look for the units to show up at a gym near you soon...
