Known as the Complaint-Mobile, the van tours San Francisco, displaying a big sign asking: HAVE YOU BEEN RIPPED OFF? Men and women volunteers in the district attorney's consumer-fraud/white-collar-crime unit listen to the complaints of passersby, then mediate with merchants, doctors and the Like. Most complaints concern car repairs; others range from false advertising to ill-fitting hairpieces. One woman complained of a backache that came from wearing a bra supposed to increase her bust size. No complaint is too small: the unit once got back a 200 soda-bottle deposit for a small boy from...

There was still no sign of surrender from the enigmatic MOVE members. O'Neill then ordered two dozen members of the special stake-out unit to walk inside and come out with the radicals. As the policemen gingerly walked inside, cries of infants were heard over a loudspeaker that MOVE members had used to hurl invectives at police. MOVE members had long sworn they would not come out alive. They warned that the police...
...miles away in the town of Thurmont, Md. (pop. 2,400). Just as a Newsweek reporter sat down to interview ABC White House Correspondent Sam Donaldson about his adventures covering the summit, a Swedish television crew glided up to film the exchange. Within seconds, an Israeli TV unit began filming the Swedes filming the Newsweek reporter interviewing ABC's Donaldson. Then two Egyptian journalists sidled over and started taking notes on how the Israelis were filming the Swedes filming...
