Less publicized was the Kfar Kassen massacre in 1956, which was carried out by regular army troops. The commander of a battalion along the Israeli-Jordanian border ordered the commander of a Frontier Guard unit to impose a strict curfew from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. on several villages. Anyone leaving his home or trying to enter the village during that time was to be shot. The curfew was announced at 4:30, leaving little time to warn the populace. ...Atonement. Black and White in Color is the dark-horse winner of this year's Oscar for best foreign picture. It was filmed by a French unit in the Ivory Coast in what almost amounts to an act of atonement: the movie not only presents a comically petty microcosm of war, but in its terse, understated way gives a withering account of the racial ignorance and contempt on which colonialism was built. The result hardly renews one's faith in human nature, but it is consistently riveting and grimly amusing...
