...That was the day he was found by U.S. forces, hiding in a hole on a relative's farm outside his hometown of Tikrit. No one in Iraq had ever seen him more vulnerable. There he was, shown on television, dirt smeared on his face, his beard unkempt, his thick head of hair matted and graying. I watched these scenes unfold in Baghdad with my friend Omar, who chuckled when he saw a doctor shining a flashlight in Saddam's open mouth. It reminded him of a trader checking the teeth of a new donkey, he said. Was this...

Intellectuals and females aside, however, the most worthwhile acquaintances we made at Oktoberfest were a number of unkempt bearded oracles. We had seen several of these shamans outside of 7-11 before, jingling their mystic wisdom goblets, but had never mustered the courage to speak with them. And oh, what we were missing. Those priests of illusion have much wisdom butter to spread. One of them is writing a historical novel about a love triangle in the Courts of Vienna...entirely in his head! David A. Rios ’07, a DJ for RH, WHRB’s underground rock program, has an opinion about the station’s mission that is as large (but not nearly as fuzzy) as his wildly-unkempt hair: “All the departments have the same goal: to play music geared to a niche…to have people listen to good music that they won’t hear somewhere else...

There are large differences between your average ironist—a grubby, unkempt faux-Francophone—and the regal presence that is the rarer (yet equally Francophone) “cerebral” ironist. The contrast is like that between mules and donkeys. The former are much like “You Oughta Know”-era Alanis Morrisette, in that they are more properly defined as social satirists than ironists proper. Their most raucous displays of irony are when they attend “The Wedding Date” high, just so that they can snicker loudly...
