...State for European Affairs Richard Holbrooke began urging a pause, worried that further attacks might backfire by making the Serbs more recalcitrant. In all, 506 sorties were flown; the Serbs shot down only one plane, a French Mirage 2000C. The two crew members ejected, but their fate is unknown. The operation was regarded as a success, but officials soon tempered their exultant initial reports...

...rekindled civil war because of it. Beirut bureau chief Lara Marlowe reports that Halaby, a leader of the influential Habashi, a fundamentalist Sunni Muslim sect, "was thought to be the person most likely to become the next musti -- or highest religious leader -- of the Sunnis." The killing, by unknown assassins, is a setback for Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, whose government has been trying to shed the terrorist image Lebanon acquired during the 1975-1990 civil war. Taken together, the fossils push the emergence of two-legged walking, or bipedalism, 500,000 years earlier than any other data had indicated...

DIED. HOWARD KOCH, 93, screenwriter; in Woodstock, New York. A lawyer, Koch wrote radio plays for Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre, notably 1938's panic-provoking War of the Worlds broadcast. His fine craft illuminated film scripts for Casablanca (1942), Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948) and-notoriously-the Soviet-friendly Mission to Moscow in 1943. Though not a communist, Koch was blacklisted in the 1950s. He outlived his vilifiers, enduring with grace and grit worthy of Bogart's Rick...
