Indeed, during our four years at Harvard one of the primary lessons we learned was this: money speaks. Especially to the administration. On a variety of occasions, we have been taught that Harvard will not listen unless the voice is backed by money. If someone is willing to give a significant donation--or if someone is able to with-hold money--then Harvard will respond to their requests. Otherwise, Harvard tends to follow its initially determined path, ignoring the requests and needs of students and employees. Whether disregarding the 4,000-plus signatures on the petition to change the Core...
...ironic as this may sound, this problem may only get worse with the V-chip. In 1992, the Cable Act ensured that patently offensive sexual programming was all in one channel which was blocked from access unless one specifically requested to be able to view it. But in June of last year, the Supreme Court struck down that part of the Cable Act, arguing that the V-chip would ensure that children were protected and that further protection was, therefore, unnecessary...
...House of Pizza holds substantial sway over the Harvard late night life. To "go on a Tommy's run" means to walk down to Mt. Auburn Street any day of the week until 3 a.m. and buy a large slice of hot, greasy and (debatably) delicious pizza for $1.25. Unless otherwise requested (and why would it be?) all pizza is sold with the famous sesame seed edge. Tommy's also sells subs--the chicken parmesean is a favorite but the tuna should be avoided--and great garlic bread...
However, we do not anticipate a mass student exodus. As The Crimson has stated in its editorials, Harvard students "are not so stupid as to dive into a class for which they are ill-prepared, unless they are willing to put in extra work." Departments should still consider concentrators the primary audience of their course offerings. We have faith that professors will maintain the rigor of their courses, and thus the option of taking departmental classes for Core credit will only be used by students in areas in which they are particularly experienced or passionate...
...some called for a return to the Intefadeh. Jewish seminary students shot and killed one Palestinian, sparking five hours of fierce rioting in which Israeli troops fired tear gas and rubber bullets, killing two Palestinians and injuring dozens. While many on both sides believe the violence will continue unless the U.S. takes a more active involvement, Clinton said Tuesday he is not prepared to host a Camp David-style Israeli-Palestinian summit, as Netanyahu had suggested, or to make any other dramatic moves soon. "It is a tricky problem for Clinton," says TIME's Jef McAllister. "The prestige...
