...working together. The College has already weakened campus minority communities through House randomization in 1996 and the subsequent reduction in the size of blocking groups. These problems were exacerbated because Harvard is severely lacking in institutional support for the space necessary for the unity of minority groups on campus. Unless Harvard is willing to make a commitment to something akin to Yale’s African American Cultural Center, then a move to a Yale-style housing system will be perceived as an assault on the unity of campus communities and groups organized around similar interests and ethnic identities...

Finally, The Smart Choice should do no harm. Yes—despite everything else—this is still most important aspect of all. If a running mate has some dark secret in his past—a mistress, a felony, rehab—he will be a liability. Unless the choice is almost inhumanly scandal-free, nothing else matters. Senator Kerry, you could object to this rule, you could (rightly) argue that it drives many qualified, capable people out of public life. But ignore it at your peril...

...fetuses as legal entities with legal rights. Congressional Democrats offered a separate piece of legislation that would have provided equally strong sentences for those who injure pregnant women, but pro-life members of Congress killed the legislation. They didn’t want a bill that would punish criminals unless it would also help them redefine the legal status of a fetus. Congress is pretending the UVVA is about crime, not abortion, but most Americans shouldn’t have any trouble figuring out how a law granting legal rights to a fetus could have a chilling effect...

...athletics complex side of North Harvard Street, the spaces closest to the river are already developed to capacity. Harvard Stadium isn’t going to be torn down, nor Lavietes nor Bright Hockey Center. Tearing down Dillon Field House wouldn’t do any good unless the university is planning on building very small houses. Move any further away—past Jordan Field walking alongside the river—and suddenly you’ve made it all the way to the intramural fields, so far away that the new complex’s inhabitants would wish...
