...Social Security in December sounds suspiciously like substituting talk for action. That is even truer of the House Republicans' suggestion to put Social Security in the hands of a commission, adding yet another to the parade of blue-ribbon panels that until now have produced little more than unread reports full of alarming statistics and familiar options. ...show no more poignant portrayal of the way depression freezes both action and curiosity in its sufferers than Lotto's Portrait of a Young Man, circa 1530. It depicts its subject with sallow face, deep dark eyes and Hamlet-black clothes, idly toying with the pages of an unread book; drying rose petals are scattered on the table next to a watching lizard, emblem of cold-bloodedness...

...with Ms. Carrier's unfortunate choice of thesis advisor, I find it odd that she could write so bluntly that she does not recommend anyone read her thesis. Was it so poorly written, or so uninteresting, that she wishes it to be buried along with the other reams of unread academic research by this year's senior class? If Ms. Carrier went to the trouble of writing an entire article based on her thesis (not to mention the trouble I and many like me took to read said editorial), it would be nice if that thesis were actually a readable...

...these lists can generate 50 messages a day. To avoid a deluge of junk E-mail, I painstakingly unsubscribed from all 106--even Barry Manilow's--only to log on Monday morning and discover I'd been subscribed overnight to 1,700 more. My file of unread E-mail had swelled to 16 megabytes, and was growing by the minute...
