...Deal America. The sex scenes between Roark and his on-again-off-again lover, journalist Dominique Francon, are so violent that Roark could probably be charged with rape today. And, post-9/11, readers may be less tolerant towards Roark, who has a disturbing propensity to blow up architecturally-unsound buildings in New York City. Nonetheless, Rand’s pulpy prose still proves riveting. And her philosophy—which extols the virtue of selfishness—remains strangely compelling. But be forewarned: if you read this book, you might never give a dime to charity again...

When the keg ban was initiated two years ago, Dean Lewis was driven by a quaint paternalistic impulse, which ultimately proved unsound. The University has lately taken steps toward a more pragmatic and results-oriented alcohol policy. We sincerely hope Harvard applies that kind of nuanced thinking to their policy on kegs. Student health and safety concerns are of primary importance, but foolishly banning all kegs serves nobody’s interests. It may in fact lead to more dangerous drinking instead of less. ...that was about it. While that may be true, it?s not going to convince one voter that Kerry and Edwards could keep America safer. Kerry has to have a stronger response. It?s not like this is the first time a campaign has accused its opponent of being unsound on national security. Lyndon Johnson?s campaign pulled its controversial ?Daisy? ad, which implied Barry Goldwater would lead the nation straight into nuclear war if he won in 1964, but it successfully amplified voters? worries about Goldwater...

...project in the glacial highlands, a move Alcoa and environmentalists support. The park could be as large as 5,275 sq km, 50% bigger than Europe's current No. 1, Norway's Hardangervidda. Sigfússon, who's also a geologist, is convinced the dam project is environmentally unsound. Pointing to the planned relocation of a glacial waterfall and the damming of sediment-carrying glacial rivers, he warns that "a huge plateau of silt" will eventually form around the large dam that, together with dust from normal soil erosion, could be blown into storms by the heavy winds that sweep...
