...SpaceShipTwo drops away and rockets off into space at 3,500 m.p.h. on its laughing-gas engine. Aboard the spaceship the two pilots will cut the rockets and the ship will coast up to 80 miles, well outside the atmosphere. For 4 min., the six passengers (now astronauts!) can unstrap and float weightless around the cabin. Earth will look like a shiny ball with white swirls surrounded by a totally black sky. Diving back into the atmosphere will be a wild ride, peaking at nearly 6 Gs--twice the rush you feel on the average roller coaster. Rutan's genius...

...quickly to save themselves by buttressing our power. We can't expect to be as lucky with the denizens of the gulf region. And we certainly wouldn't make our luck by staying the course and hiding behind Bush's fears of Middle East dominoes. We need him to unstrap America's still muscular diplomacy to seed the antiterrorist soil within Iraq, to structure a regional peace among states that cringe from regional war, to blunt the disasters of chaos and defeat--and perhaps even to snatch successes beforehand...

...aimed principally at the vulnerable high power system. Twenty percent of Bolzano's electricity was knocked out in the first two days. Whole factories shut down. Cars belonging to pro-Italian Tyroleans were bombed. Only one man was killed, a road worker who was blown apart trying to unstrap a bomb from a tree along the Brenner highway. But police averted a major disaster when they discovered and defused a bomb only an hour before it was set to go off under a dam at Selva dei Molini. The dam's collapse would have flooded the entire valley...
