Civil rights groups cried foul and vowed revenge. "It really was a case of John Ashcroft misleading the U.S. Senate," says People for the American Way chief Ralph Neas. "Ronnie White wasn't anti- death penalty or pro-criminal." White had voted to uphold death penalties in 41 out of 59 capital cases that came before him, his allies noted. In most of the cases where he didn't uphold death sentences, he wasn't alone--the decision was unanimous. And in two of six cases in which White wrote for the majority upholding a death sentence...
...Bush administration to classify another epidemic or even an environmental problem like global warming as security threats to the U.S., but we can always hope. Perhaps Powell at least realizes that AIDS poses an enormous problem on the African continent, destabilizing entire regions, and that he should therefore uphold Albright's decision to call it a threat to national security...
...death penalty would be an issue in the race, Ashcroft portrayed White, a talented and well-respected jurist, as a pro-criminal activist intent on undermining the capital punishment system. This occurred despite White's endorsement by the Missouri Fraternal Order of Police, despite White's votes to uphold most death sentences that came before his court, despite the decisions by Ashcroft appointees to join White in many of his decisions reversing a death sentence, and despite Ashcroft's complete lack of interest in White's death-penalty views during the confirmation hearing...
...short-lived campaign for the White House last year, he verbally attacked Missouri Supreme Court Justice Ronnie White, an African American whom Bill Clinton has appointed to the federal bench, for supposedly being "pro-criminal" and soft on capital punishment. The charge was outright slander. White had voted to uphold the death sentence in 41 of the 59 cases that came before him, roughly the same proportion as Ashcroft's court appointees when he was Governor. No wonder Gordon Baum, leader of white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens, in 1999 included Ashcroft along with Pat Buchanan in the circle...
...sure, he's unlikely to elicit much sympathy from the same Chilean Supreme Court that last August stripped the general of the immunity from prosecution he'd authored for himself as a precondition for stepping down in 1990. Of course it's quite possible that the high court will uphold Monday's technical ruling, but its August decision presumably leaves the field open to Pinochet's accusers to simply keep trying. And that would leave the general's attorneys to fall back on his fading faculties as the grounds for keeping him out of court...
