...humanitarian work carried on among us by the American Red Cross and so worthily directed by you has earned the acclaim of the entire Italian nation. In succoring the wounded at our front and in mitigating the sufferings of citizens driven from their homes by the enemy's invasion the American Red Cross has earned everlasting gratitude and has strengthened still more the solid basis of the trusting and cordial friendship between the two countries...

...Those of us who remain in college are still apt to think too much of our personal comforts and pleasures. The theatre-going habit and other expensive forms of amusement have not been over-come as they should have. It is time that we found better and cheaper means of recreation. A great cause is now calling upon us and the response must be unanimous and to the limit. Those who do without unnecessary pleasures will do part of their share. ...pawn for side-stepping work is something to which no one consciously stoops. The fact that these are exceptional times calls upon us to perform exceptional tasks. A man's accomplishments today should be limited only by the time at his disposal. Granted that men are doing more now than ever before, the fact still remains that a considerable part of each man's day is not utilized. The war demands economies of all kinds and that of time is not the least among them. Very few of us have reached a point where we no longer are able...
