After spending $20 million to develop a miniaturized on-board TV camera for the Apollo spacecraft and equip tracking stations to receive its signals, NASA officials last month decided to limit its use to only two brief transmissions - one during the third manned orbital flight, the other while astronauts are actually walking on the surface of the moon. NASA's official reason for the curtailed use of in-flight TV was that the camera (which weighs only 71 Ibs.) pushed Apollo too close to its weight limitations...

...Alice in Wonderland, pictures of Stalin, shots of comic strips. The director's off-camera voice constantly interrogates his performers, who stop acting to reply. Visually, La Chinoise is almost entirely successful. The rapid shifting of subject matter, the kinetic attack on the attention span, the dazzling use of primary colors and skeletal cinematic composition all suggest the possibility of transferring minimal art from the museum to the movies...

Another blessing is director Koivumaki's coordination of the individually engaging performers. They always work well with each other--even in the crowd scenes the level of concentration is high. Koivumaki also makes full use of his theatre and Arnold Clapman's attractive set by taking advantage of the balcony, both stage levels and the seating floor for his brisk blocking. He has at his disposal a set of costumes (credited to four girls) that have been carefully designed rather than simply produced...
