...soundtrack for The Other Sister) is an amazingly entertaining song. Its colorful lyrics and jungle-like drumming makes you want to jump up and prance around like a little kid. The album opens with the title song, which is chock-full of fast beats, dance rhythms and excellent use of electric guitar. (Or, as Jones calls it, "'I Want You" on an adrenaline rush.") It also has clever lines. My favorite: "I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you/I believe that beauty magazines promote low self-esteem." Go Savage Garden! Down with Vogue...
Trouble is, the voice is still the same scratchy, little-girl voice as before, and the tunes, while catchy, are still the same teenage-targeted, forgettable tunes as before. Heck, the girl won't even use her full name, still clinging on to the Mel C moniker (it's Melanie Chisholm, if you must know). Solo album or not, this is still the same Spice Girls album dressed up in slightly more sophisticated hues...
...Sunday's crowd was made up mostly of bona fide, Ween T-shirt-wearing fans. Most clocked in at well over half baked and still smoking, not surprising for the followers of a band known for its recreational use of Scotchguard. There were also a surprising number of 30- and 40-somethings, most of who were singing along with the college-age masses. The enthusiastic audience filled the normally calm theater to cramped standing room, inspiring the band to attempt their P-Funk-parodic magnum opus.
