...Athletes often credit an outstanding performance to a "second wind" - a sudden burst of energy that seems to occur after fatigue has set in. But two University of Utah researchers have apparently shown that there is really no second wind. Nyles Humphrey and Robert Ruhling, of the University's department of physical education, asked 26 men between the ages of 18 and 25 to run on an inclined treadmill at a constant speed of 7.5 m.p.h. until their heart rates reached 180 beats per minute or they became fatigued. Fourteen of the stationary runners said that they experienced second...

The dilemma argues for some compromise solution in which the tapes would be heard in private, either by judges or, to preserve the separation of powers, by a panel of citizens, as Senator Howard Baker suggested...

...spare moments Taylor chips away on a piece for piano and orchestra commissioned by Conductor Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony. Because he plays so well in so many styles, it is not easy to define the essential Taylor manner. By turns impish, husky and lyrical, at its heart it is an elegant, note-clustered filigree reminiscent of Taylor's onetime mentor Art Tatum. There is no pain in Taylor's improvisations, nor much funky blues. He firmly believes that jazz is America's classical music, and his playing shows...
