...boom time in the Rockies. While most of the U.S. is suffering from the blues, or stuck in an outright funk like California, the six states along the spectacular spine of the Rockies -- from Montana in the north through Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah to New Mexico in the south -- are prospering happily. This is the good-news belt. Since 1991, economic growth has regularly exceeded 5%, compared with an anemic 1% in the rest of the country. The last time the U.S. as a whole enjoyed comparable growth was 1984. The Rockies' unemployment rate is 5.4%, nearly 2 points...

...front-porch way of life with the urban-bred, high-tech worldliness of computers and modems. When the San Francisco earthquake struck almost four years ago, computer writer T.C. Doyle, 30, and his wife Naomi, 29, picked up and moved to scenic -- and relatively sophisticated and pricey -- Park City, Utah. "We wanted a smaller town that was on the upswing," says Doyle. From there he now sends stories almost daily to his employer, Computer Reseller News, in Manhasset, New York. Bruce Tipple, 48, moved to the same mining town turned resort from Minneapolis seven years ago and set up shop...

Dateline executive producer Neal Shapiro contends the clinic's attacks come only because Dateline is still "vulnerable" as a result of the GM fiasco. Even the threat of litigation was bad news for image-battered Dateline. Earlier this month, Utah's Orrin Hatch took to the floor of the U.S. Senate to denounce the show for its "false and reckless" claim, aired Aug. 3, that he had introduced legislation that would have benefited a firm in which he holds a financial interest. Dateline's producers say no retraction is forthcoming...

...further shown when he suggested that Roe v. Wade should be done away with so citizens within a state could have the "choice" to make abortion legal or not where they live. Fact: Abortion is legal. Allowing states the option of outlawing abortion (and states such as Louisiana and Utah surely would) immediately takes away a woman's 'choice' over her own body. That is what the entire abortion debate is about; does a woman have the right to control her own body? We of the pro-choice majority say "Yes! Any other obvious questions...

...passenger airlines have begun flying in the past year alone. They range from Reno Air, a full-service carrier based in Nevada that regales its passengers with California Chardonnays and fancy food baskets, to Morris Air, a low- budget, no-frills outfit started by former Salt Lake City, Utah, travel agent June Morris, the first female founder of an airline. Other newcomers include Kiwi International, a regional discounter that flies six cozy 727s out of Newark, New Jersey; Private Jet, an Atlanta-based charter service with a fleet of 12 big MD-80s; and Family Airlines of Las Vegas...
