Using fetoscopy, physicians can actually see the fetus in the uterus and spot certain physical defects. Says Dr. Thomas Gindhart, of the National Cancer Institute: "You can look right at parts of the fetus as it floats by. You can count the number of fingers." That alone can reveal much about the condition of the fetus. A six-fingered hand, for example, may accompany some forms of retardation. Also discernible are such features as eyes, ears, mouth and genitals. Even more important, the technique enables doctors to take blood and tissue from the fetus. From these samples they can diagnose...
...commercial big tune until Entrepreneurs Bob Bissett and Marie Shields teamed with Fort Lauderdale Obstetrician William Eller in 1975. Eller selected as their recording artist a nonsmoking, well-nourished pregnant woman, waited until she began labor and then inserted a tiny microphone through her dilated cervix into her uterus...
...Naeye speculates that sperm or enzymes in the seminal fluid may somehow aid bacteria in penetrating the cervix and entering the uterus. But both Naeye and obstetricians are cautious about any wholesale proscriptions of sexual activity during pregnancy. They point out that the births studied took place between 1959 and 1966, when the fetal and infant death rate was much higher than now. Thus improved methods of caring for expectant mothers and newborn infants may have obviated some of the harm that could result from sex during pregnancy. Also, the analysis did not take into account the effect of intercourse...
Even if they survive, children under two will be permanently scarred by prolonged starvation. Most brain growth occurs in the uterus and before the age of two; adequate nutrition after that cannot remedy an earlier deficiency. For older survivors, recovery can be complete. Doctors warn, however, that a patient must be reintroduced carefully and gradually to food. The heart and digestive system are so weak that a sudden gorging can induce shock and death. Well-meaning G.I.s at the end of World War II inadvertently killed many concentration camp inmates by giving them big meals. It may take a month...
...artificial insemination and, about a week later, the live embryos-usually five, but sometimes ten or more-are withdrawn through the cervix by means of a catheter. Each embryo is then transferred, either by a six-inch incision in the side or directly through the cervix, to the uterus of a less perfect host mother, which carries the superior calf to full term. Since supercows, or "queen bees," can be bred seven times a year, each can produce 35 or more embryos annually. This can make the herd better but not significantly bigger since, even with embryo transfer...
