...obstacles to the realization of the EPIC Utopia are so obvious as scarcely to need comment. They fairly jump at the reader of the book. Not only is Sinclair's economic theory shoddy, but his Rousseau-istic faith in the goodness of man is child-like in its simplicity. That all the wealthy people in California would allow themselves to be peacefully legislated out of their property in a few months presumes just a bit too much on the softening influence of California sunshine. Sinclair's name may appear on the Democratic ballot in the primaries this August...
...distillers, so that the public may see just how badly they are being reamed; of course, no one has yet seen even the tail end of one of these cost lists as it vanishes into the bushes of the lobbyists. There has been endless talk as to the utopia which we shall have attained when prices and taxes are so regulated that the bootleggers are driven out of business; unfortunately, these charming bits of descriptive writing have of late been pushed off the front pages by articles on the latest boost in federal tax per gallon on all liquors...
Bali, the sleepy Dutch East Indian island which has become a Utopia for jaded Occidentals, was one of the last ports of call for Composer Henry Eichheim, a great traveler since he stopped playing the violin in the Boston Symphony. His own Bali, a recording of these impressions, was played in Philadelphia by Leopold Stokowski to whom it was dedicated. A magnificent orchestration, replete with Balinese gongs and percussives, gave it true exotic coloring...

This side is the determination by the Federal authorities to operate the existing power-generating plants in competition with new stations as well. The T.V.A. gives them warning to cooperate, reduce rates, or face the competition of duplicate plants. Over this entire question there has been thrown a great deal of confusion, adulterated with considerable propaganda. Experts and college professors, publicists and Congressmen have been bought...
...oldest house in the U. S. specializing in Government securities, C. F. Childs & Co., acidly bulletined: "Utopia is derived from Greek words meaning nowhere. Toward that mythical place we are making detours...
