...color is not the only cinematic self-indulgence on the part of Demy. He also treats the audience to a variety of trick shots which to the contemporary eye seem comical in their overtness. As the lovers stroll through Cherbourg singing their famous duet, it is obvious from their utterly still arms and legs and their perfectly even gliding motion that they are not walking at all but being towed on a dolly, though the shot shows only their upper halves. An attempt to innovate on the diaolgue scene has one of the actors singing directly into the camera while...
Solondz evokes the hellishness of Dawn's experiences through the use of killer details. When Dawn develops a crush on the town hunk and lead singer of her brother's band (Eric Mabius), her attempts to dance along to his crooning while sitting on a parked car epitomizes her utter awkwardness. The song written to celebrate the Wiener parents' anniversary is a tribute to suburban mediocrity, and the last shot of the film, which has Dawn singing her school anthem, bewilderedly, along with a busload of her classmates/tormentors, evokes the inevitability of Dawn's niche in the junior high universe...

...problems without communicating them to others--contributes to a chemical imbalance that impairs one's ability to function normally and induces a feeling of despair and hopelessness. If unrelieved by talk, therapy or medical treatment, the chemical imbalance induces a spiral of decline, which leads ultimately to utter paralysis and self-destruction. Admiral Boorda may have been particularly susceptible. Throughout his adult life--more than 30 years of challenge in peace and war--his ethic toward problem solving was that of the solitary commander: solve the problem, don't evidence doubt, don't seek help...
...most maddening aspect of the show has been the increasing and incongruous presence of real-world issues. In the past months Melrose has tackled child abuse, outing and now date rape. Message drama has its place on television, but not within the context of a show whose characters utter lines like, "You think I want a life of peanut butter and jelly? I want lobster. I want caviar. I want style." Perhaps the beginning of the end really came toward the climax of this last season, when Amanda had cancer. She didn't seem to lose a strand of hair...
