...dark Orwellian visions, leavened by some bright comic asides and lightened by some of Browne's most danceable music. The author concedes that the title track is "pretty sarcastic and maybe a little haughty," but its weirdly resonant images ("I hear the U.S.S.R. will be open soon/ As vacationland for lawyers in love") give it a power that lasts longer than any punch line. The song is full of laughs, but it is not a joke, just as the album, full of ominous broodings about personal loss and international nightmare, dances clear of being oppressive with its melodic lightness...
...sheer force the flood had generated. Once in 100 years, they had figured, the Big Thompson might be hit by a flood sending 19,000 cu. ft. of water a second through a section called The Narrows at a depth of 12 ft. "We are a pragmatic people," explains a senior Israeli trade official. "We cannot spit in their faces forever." The breakthrough can be traced to several years before the Middle East war, when it was revealed that Germany had been secretly supplying Israel with millions of dollars worth of arms. With much embarrassment, Bonn stopped these shipments rather than face political reprisals by Arab nations, particularly their implied threats to recognize East Germany...
Republican delegates, who have begun arriving in droves in this vacationland, are a mixed lot. One out of five is a returnee from the 1964 convention which nominated Barry Goldwater on the first ballot, according to Congressional Quarterly's statistics. One out of 50 is a Negro...
