...with Red support, took his stand to the left of Nehru and stayed there for the rest of the conference. But then came another surprise: Burma's young (47), soft-spoken Nu, a longtime Nehru man, came out hard against the Nehru plan: the plan would create a vacuum; the Communists might take over Indo-China-and Burma was the next nation but one (Siam) away. The Prime Ministers approved Nehru's appeal for a ceasefire, and his suggestion that France must guarantee IndoChina's independence at Geneva-but nothing more. They conceded Nehru's resolution...
...Revolution? On the answer to this question hang enormous issues. Physicists are already comparing the neutrino hunt with the igth century hunt for the "celestial ether," which was then considered necessary to carry waves of light through the vacuum of space. When the Michelson-Morley experiment (reported in 1887) proved that the ether does not exist, physics was thrown into confusion and had to be rescued painfully by Einstein's relativity...
Schine had ordered his fantastic electronic piano, called a DynaTone, from the Ansley Radio Corporation in Trenton, New Jersey. Colley describes this strange instrument as having strings like a regular piano whose vibrations were reproduced by vacuum tubes and played through an amplifier instead of sounding directly. The same amplifier could also be used for a radio and phonograph which were set into one side of the piano. With this arrangement the piano could be played with either the radio or phonograph through a series of microphones in the piano. Colley also seems to remember a cabinet...
Plastic Surgeon Kiskadden urged his colleagues to warn parents of an equally potent but less obvious danger: the hollow-chamber type of appliance plug used with many vacuum cleaners, toasters, coffeepots and most irons. Even when the appliance is disconnected, the other end of the cord is often left plugged into the wall outlet. In eight years at Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles, he and Dr. Sanford R. Dietrich have seen 16 children, mostly under three, with severe electrical burns of the mouth. These, said Dr. Kiskadden, "are almost always caused by putting a live plug...
Like Morrison, dozens of other U.S. builders are working around the globe. From the West Coast, Alhambra, Calif.'s C. F. Braun & Co. has gone to Australia to build a $25 million refinery for Standard-Vacuum Refining Co.; the Ralph M. Parsons Co. of Los Angeles has five projects abuilding in Japan, three in India, three more in Turkey and Iran, others in Sweden, England, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and Colombia. San Francisco's Bechtel Corp. has been in Venezuela building the Cerro Bolivar iron-ore development (TIME, June 1) for U.S. Steel, is now on the other side...
