Your fundamental assumption appears to be that at present public education in America is free from the influence of any set of philosophical or religious values, and that to introduce any such set of values, to the exclusion of any other, would violate the spiritual vacuum in which, by your terms, public education is best carried on. In making this assumption you seem to forget that by excluding the influence of religious values in public education you are, in effect, advocating the further extension of that philosophy which now dominates the public school system, namely: materialist secularism. It is ironic...
Optimistic View. Two days later, Socony-Vacuum's Vice President J. C. Case took a different view of the basin at Socony's annual meeting. Said he: Socony is finding good oil at depths as shallow as 3,000 ft. and will drill eight to ten wells there this year. Result: Northern Pacific shot up nearly five points, and the whole market rose. Other oilmen explained the seeming contradiction in Williston estimates: Texaco's holdings are near the center of the basin, where the oil is more than 9,000 ft. down, whereas others...
Back to Life. Luyet's next step was to develop a "freeze-dry" method so that frozen tissue could be dehydrated in a high vacuum. "It's one of my pet projects," he says. "We can think of the possibilities of drying a warm-blooded animal like a dog, rehydrating it and then expect it to live." The main problem, as Luyet sees it, is mechanical. It is not yet possible to freeze objects thicker than 1/100th of an inch into suspended animation...
...Meets Girl. What brings lovers in such droves to Bride & Groom is its promise to feather their nests. The newlyweds get a free, week-long honeymoon ("We pay for everything except liquor," says Nelson), the loan of a Pontiac, and a shower of presents ranging from vacuum cleaners and gas ranges to silverware and cigarette lighters. The ceremony itself is whipped through in something under four minutes. The rest of the 15-minute program is devoted to music by an organ, a harp and a sentimental baritone, a quick rehash of the boy-meets-girl details of the particular romance...
Since 1933, Ultramar Petroleum, a joint subsidiary of Socony-Vacuum and the Texas Co., has been refining crude oil shipped into Argentina from Colombia and the Gulf of Mexico area, and marketing the finished products through 1,500 affiliated outlets. But when Juan Peron, who has never encouraged foreign investments in Argentina, refused to let Ultramar take out its profits in dollars, it had no incentive to improve the property. The refinery (Argentina has only 17 others) became obsolescent, and millions of dollars were needed to modernize...
