Enter a new kind of English hero. He is young but not angry. He couldn't care less about whether there is room at the top. He is a vague and vagrant first person singular who drifts through a colloid of far-out characters that are his (and his plot's) only visible means of support. His mate is a dim, dumb, sensible girl, who pulls up his socks from time to time and does her best to dry his tears of existential anguish...

Faulkner, the social order is violated, debasing the semifeudal values of a landed gentry. In Tennessee Williams, what is violated is love and a kind of vagrant individuality. In Carson McCullers, there is the violation of innocence. At its best, this mixture of grief and grievance is poetic, at its worst, bathetic. As craftsmen, the Southern writers are generally sloppy; they represent the triumph of mood over matter...

Where the method richly pays off is in its not giving Conrad (well played by Dick Gautier) too much houseroom, in its saying bye-bye to him oftener than it squeals hello. In the same way, because a whole rock-'n'-roll call...

Missing Again. The vagrant MIG flew on to the nearby port city of Tandjung-priok, opened fire at the huge gas tank of the Stanvac Oil Co., missed the tank but wounded 14 people. Next, the plane swept over Bogor, 30 miles from Djakarta, made a strafing run at Sukarno's massive Bogor palace, and missed again. With its fuel exhausted, the MIG made a bellylanding in a West Java rice field. As the pilot, Lieut. Daniel Mauker, 28, looking dazed and shaken, stumbled from his Russian-made plane, he was seized...
