...ideas, of rival systems and ways of life, the deteriorating relationship between the world's two superpowers sank to alarming depths. In the U.S., both houses of Congress overwhehnhigly adopted resolutions deploring the trials and the Soviet denial of human rights. Democratic Senator Henry ("Scoop") Jackson urged, in vain, that Secretary of State Vance should post! pone his trip to Geneva for a SALT conference with Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko (see following story), lest the willingness to continue negotiations be interpreted as "the wrong signal at the wrong time." His fellow Senator Daniel Moynihan said that "to send...

...song "Is Your Love In Vain" and the rest of Dylan's recently released Street Legal album rekindle the cries that he has sold out and, worse, sold out to pop. The critics-confident they finally have the smoking gun-begin once again to close in on Dylan; but as the trial opens the only one missing from the scene is the Jack of Hearts himself. Dylan, it seems, has slipped away by declaring himself an "entertainer" and by developing a style to prove it; he shrugs off criticism as if those who simply view him as a poet-prophet...

The trumpet-heralded introduction sounds smooth, all right, but the pastiche of instrumentals, background vocals and Dylan's lyrics fails to gel. The instrumentals and female vocalists in the chorus only serve to take away what power the lyrics have; in addition, the words themselves are not above suspicion, with lines like "All right, I'll take a chance, I'll fall in love with you" and the chorus "Are you going to risk it all, or is your love in vain?" Smooth...

...Mick Jagger of the silver screen. His adamant refusal to grow up and be serious is admittedly rather charmingly contagious and his ebullient, almost Byronic self-absorption displayed in his latest performances is actually an amusing parody of the character type portrayed in Carly Simon's You're So Vain. Beatty was rumored to be the most likely candidate as the real-life model for the song's supremely narcissistic hero. He can't seem to shake off his reputation as an obsessed Casanova, pursuing several women at once while ultimately infatuated with himself. Yet there is something strangely...

...Bonn for Japan's efforts to reduce its huge surpluses by restraining exports and prodding domestic activity to a 7% growth. Other Japanese policymakers, however, complained that Tokyo's labors will come to naught unless Washington helps out by controlling the dollar. "It will all be in vain if the U.S. does not cooperate," said Economic Planning Agency Director Kiichi Miyazawa. "The fact that our surpluses continue to increase despite our efforts is due mainly to U.S. foot-dragging on her energy problem and inflation." (Another cause of the surplus, U.S. officials argue, is the inability of American...
