...Ritchard, Tammy Grimes, Larry Kurt, John Raitt, Dick Shawn and Lillian Gish. The three ladies stand out: Munsel with her silver-tongued lyric soprano; Grimes, who is a mischievous imp of the stage; and the in destructible Gish, who at 80 is still a darling little girl and a valiant trouper...
Gitl makes a valiant effort, but cannot conform to her husband's new ways. With his American values, Jake claims that he is twice as good a man as their boarder, Bernstein, because he makes twice as much money. Perhaps the sweatshop boss best summarizes the differences between the Old and New Worlds when he observes that in America, "the peddler becomes the boss and the Yeshiva student sits at the sewing machine." At one point, as her neighbor Mrs. Kavarsky is squeezing a groaning Gitl into a corset for that sleek American look, she tells her, "You wanna...
Finally the MFA has an incentive to unearth its strong American art collection. The Bicentennial has flushed American art out of storage and embellished it with historical dioramas, slidetapes and music in two shows, "Paul Revere's Boston" and "Valiant Upstarts." In a valiant effort to make psychological sense of the plot, he has turned the scenes involving the Saracen and his court into a dream sequence-a wedding-bound maiden's erotic fantasy about a phantom lover. Beyond that, Nureyev has blessedly jettisoned narrative, so that for the most part his Raymonda...
...airliner roared in, fatally low and short of the runway. Still a full 2,300 ft. from 22-L but otherwise on course, it struck a row of 22-ft. towers supporting the runway approach lights. It clipped three of them. Then, in what may have been a final valiant effort by the pilot to regain control, it momentarily cleared the next three. Finally, it plunged into four more...
