...chief function was to move chunks of the U. S. population from unproductive terrain to land where they could make a living. Most remarkable of a series of what even the President called costly failures was an effort to settle 200 U. S. farmers in Alaska's Matanuska Valley, where many of those settlers, still remaining after two years of tribulation, are spending this summer trying to raise a crop of winter wheat because the Government supplied them with the wrong seed. In June 1936, R. A. had a 19,700 payroll. Last July, it had been cut almost...
...Post Office after a ruling by the Interstate Commerce Commission last spring forbidding TWA to expand in that direction (TIME, March 22). It is probably the most scenic flight for its length on any U. S. airline, passing over Grand Canyon, Boulder Dam, Painted Desert, Indian reservations. Death Valley, high Sierras and San Francisco's famed bridges. And by entering San Francisco, TWA breaks United Air's monopoly there. After almost a week's clowning, Editor Woods set out on another junket close to his heart, a trip to Fort Peck Dam in Montana and the Tennessee Valley. Arrest. For several weeks SEC has been investigating the sale of some 273,000 shares of stock registered last year by Trenton Valley Distillers Corp., a sizable company with a plant at Detroit, which is now closed. It was discovered first that the stock had not been sold through the underwriters named in the registration statement; further, that the company took $1 a share for stock which was at that time selling for $3 over-the-counter in Detroit. The difference was apparently absorbed by no less than four sets of middle men and at least two go-betweens...
...this preposterous maze SEC haled up Trenton Valley's ex-president, a Canadian named Harry Low, who promptly put himself in hot water by admitting that he had himself contracted to buy 45,000 shares of his company's stock at $1, a fact not mentioned in the registration statement. To the Commission's counsel, E. Forrest Tancer and H. Victor Schwimmer, this seemed a willful omission-a plain violation of the Securities Act, punishable by fine or imprisonment. Usual procedure in such cases is for SEC to hand over its material to the Department of Justice...
