When they're elected, substantive politicians like Reagan and JFK are able to ascend to the presidency with clear mandates for governance. Such was the case for Reagan in 1980 (though not in 1984) and for JFK in 1960. But Bush's vapid 1988 campaign left him with a mandate only for no new taxes, no furloughs for Black criminals, more flags and pork rinds...
...inescapable problem is the play's candy-box presentation of mortal agony as a peaceful, painless passing into a warm yellow light, followed by a resumption for eternity of one's former games and rituals. Save for about three minutes of medical candor, this is a vapid insult to anyone struggling with the real problem of mortality. Perhaps Scott, 64, finds this inanity reassuring. But what a pity to waste his gifts on piffle...
...opening acts provided the only negative moments of this jam. The Yale Baker's Dozen typified everything that can be vapid about a capella music. But even they had their moments-the group gave a particularly memorable rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime." Unfortunately that smattering of praise cannot be bestowed upon the Wellesley Widows. There was nothing redeeming about their performance-the group would have better entertained the audience by remaining in their part of Massachusetts...
...editors do seem to understand the difference between the vivid humor present in such comics as "Life in Hell" and "Zippy" and the vapid four-panel daily strips that dominate the commercial comics business. But the editors' efforts would have been more informative if they had provided a greater context in which the non-junkie might understand current comics...
...would also have liked to see a Pudding show that bucked the recent trend toward vapid sexual humor and returned to the good old days when the productions were satire as well as burlesque...
