(the outlawed Irish Republican Army) tied the two boys to a lamppost and poured cold tar varnish and feathers over their shaved heads. Placards tied around the victims' necks proclaimed; "This man has been found guilty and confessed to breaking and entering. This sentence has been passed by the Republican movement...
After 317 covers for the Saturday Evening Post, plus countless ads for everything from varnish to the Boy Scouts, Norman Rockwell is enshrined-in the U.S. at least-as "the best-known artist who ever lived." He is certainly the chronicler of one American dream, with its gawky Huck Finns, jolly G.I.s, laundered blacks and apple-cheeked mothers in bifocals; its flags, turkeys, sneakers and little clapboard banks. The result, though it sometimes gives the impression that the paintings have just been overzealously cleaned and scraped, offers a rare chance to linger over details normally lost in murk. Weight: 10½ pounds...
