...middle ground between its European and North American allies on one side and the conservative, Islam-dominated societies of fellow Arab countries. Now Moroccans fear they may have the worst of both worlds: the strain of jihadist militancy rooted in the affluent nations of the Middle East, and the vast, economically stricken populations from which al-Qaeda networks have so effectively recruited in the West. Investigations last week into the five kamikaze attacks that rocked Morocco's economic capital revealed the 15 terrorists involved were all native sons - 20 to 24- year-old residents of the desperately poor neighborhood...
Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino is entirely right when he calls for higher PILOT payments in these tough economic times. Similarly, city leaders in Washington D.C.—where Harvard owns the vast, tax-exempt Dumbarton Oaks in extremely affluent Georgetown—are considering the University as a potential source of revenue...
...platform of “students first, activism second”. This new executive, called “Evolution not Revolution,” won by a landslide with one of the highest turnouts in Concordia’s history. And that’s the thing: The vast majority of students do not agree with the CSU’s recent extremism. Even though many, including myself, are strongly opposed to certain Israeli policies, very few believe in globalizing the Intifada. Academically, Concordia is a fine university with world-renowned faculties in the Fine Arts, Business, and Humanities. Unfortunately...

Moreover, it often seems you can tell which Moral Reasoning classes a Salient editor has taken—and which he or she has missed—by the author’s choice of philosophers...
What is most worrisome is that Pappin and his peers propose to give the blind ignorance of homophobia an intellectual foundation. I doubt that the vast number of Americans who fear or hate homosexuality can easily glide into a discussion of classical European thought to support their beliefs. Most of them, I would venture to say, are homophobic because they are products of their environment. They likely grew up in a culture where it was an accepted fact for homosexuals to be discriminated against. Perhaps they were told that the God they worship believed homosexuality was sinful. For these Americans...
