Ball was a lithe and inventive physical comedian, and her famous slapstick bits--trying to keep up with a candy assembly line, stomping grapes in an Italian wine vat--were justly celebrated. But she was far more than a clown. Her mobile face could register a whole dictionary of emotions; her comic timing was unmatched; her devotion to the truth of her character never flagged. She was a tireless perfectionist. For one scene in which she needed to pop a paper bag, she spent three hours testing bags to make sure she got the right size and sound...
Haney, an environmental entrepreneur since his college days, when he launched a company to break down air pollutants, first went looking for government work in the last weeks of the Bush Administration. His technology, which neutralizes toxic detritus in a vat of iron heated to 3,000[degrees] F, seemed like a promising solution for the Energy Department's nuclear mess. Another friend ordered a slice, which stuck to the side of the oven door despite the employee's attempt to remove it from the reheating oven; she shrugged and served...

Cruella ends up the victim of much of this comic buffoonery, as she is kicked by a horse, squashed by an overweight hog, and immersed in a vat of molasses. This sequence is not particularly agonizing to watch, but it detracts from the movie's slightly more sophisticated approach to recreating the story...
