...Binaural shows that it's still a force to be reckoned with (the album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts). The songs--such as the muted but passionate Light Years--are less impatient and rage filled than much of Pearl Jam's earlier work. Lead singer Eddie Vedder, married and mature, seems more focused on emotional detail than moshing. If you're looking for the answer to Who's Next, Pearl Jam, rather quietly, is building a long-term career to rival the rock legends of the past...
...road, playing with Korn, Kid Rock, Powerman 5000 and System of a Down on their "Summer Sanitarium" tour. That heavy dose of metal kicks off June 30 at Foxboro Stadium and continues to other stadiums, speedways and arenas. Meanwhile, grunge lives on with Pearl Jam (fronted by Eddie Vedder, right), whose U.S. tour begins in August and runs through November. (The band's sixth album, Binaural, hits stores May 23.) Which would be fine except that Vedder isn't dead, so Stapp's vocal style comes across as a sort of ripoff. Still, Creed has its fans: the band's first album, My Own Prison, sold nearly 4 million copies. Its new CD, like Prison, features pile-driving hard rock and lyrics about spiritual longing. A few songs are agreeable in a middle-of-the-road sort of way. But that road is about as well traveled...
...singles chart, a region inhabited lately by the likes of the Backstreet Boys. A cover of a song that was a hit for J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers in 1964, Last Kiss is on the compilation album No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees. Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder decided to cover the tune after finding a 45 of it in an antiques store. It's a spare, morose song with Vedder's voice warbling lovelorn over a straight-ahead drum beat. Going back to basics has put Pearl Jam back...
