WHERE THE MUSICAL DIVERGES from Shakespeare, the difference seems less like a change than a clever exploitation of submerged meaning in the original. In the adapted version, Proteus doesn't merely leave Julia's affection in the lurch, he leaves her pregnant, too. A vehement argument sung in four-part disharmony ensues on the desirability and proper emotional upbringing of illegitimate children. While Shakespeare doesn't wrangle over issues as pragmatic as pregnancy in this play, you wonder if he didn't have more on his mind than Julia's male disguise when he put these words in her mouth...
Whatever the plan's shortcomings, even its critics give Carter the highest marks for focusing national attention on the problem, for ending the period of inertia and corridor infighting within the Administration, and for opening an intense, even vehement, national debate...
...four parties which comprise the Janata differ in ideology and background. The Jan Sangh, which is the largest group, was a rightwing, communal Hindu party, a less vehement descendant of the militant RSS that allegedly murdered Mahatma Gandhi. The BLD was largely made up of small-time landowners from northern India. The Old Congress was the conservative wing of the Congress Party which split away in 1969. Finally, there are the Socialists led by trade union leader George Fernandes, a group rather mild as far as Socialists go, but the only leftist element in this coalition...

Congressmen, says one Senate aide, dread being put in the position "of voting how much cancer is to be allowed in food." But public outrage against the saccharin ban is so vehement-in some congressional offices it accounted for two of every three letters and phone calls from constituents last week-as to make it likely that some exceptions to the Delaney amendment will be enacted. Representative Barbara Mikulski, a Baltimore Democrat and a dieter who has "just lost 50 pounds," says...
Pentagon supporters in the Congress wasted little time in launching a determined and vehement assault on the Warnke nomination, led by Senate hawks like Henry Jackson (D-Wash.) and Sam Nunn (D-Ga.) of the Armed Services Committee. Although the Pentagon camp has often distorted Warnke's views (as in the anonymous memorandum circulated earlier this month in the Senate), there are two clear positions at the heart of the disagreement. First, Warnke has questioned the utility of numerical military superiority in the nuclear age. While conceding that deterrence requires a perceivable ability to retaliate effectively in response...
